Fort Ebey State Park is set on the western side of Whidbey Island. It was originally constructed as a coastal defense fort during WWII. There are concrete gun emplacements and underground rooms perfect for exploring. The 651 acre park also offers 25 miles of mixed use walking and bike trails as well as beaches for exploring. After spending the night at Deception Pass State Park we decided to head south on Whidbey Island to explore Fort Ebey. Wow, what incredible views! We loved exploring the old bunkers and underground rooms, but the views of the Olympics were definitely my favorite. We had a picnic lunch down by the water and the girls loved exploring an adding onto a driftwood fort. I think they would have stayed all day if we let them! Ry definitely ate her fair share of sand! We decided we wanted a bit of exercise so convinced them to go exploring a bit more. We enjoyed a nice hike around Lake Pondilla where we saw a juvenile bald eagle. We were the only ones on the path and loved looking for flowers, sticks or anything else the girls find interesting! We only spent a couple hours at Fort Ebey but would love to return with bikes and to watch the paragliders the Fort Ebey is known for.
